I have got to stop saying "sumimasen" [excuse me] when I mean "gomen" or "gomen nasai" [I'm sorry/ very sorry] even though they are mostly interchangeable. I just default to sumimasen because I don't think I like the way "gomen" sounds.
I have to remember to use "gozaimasu" and "nasai" with my host family, even if they don't say anything about my lack of honorifics or lapses into plain-form colloquial speach. I must remember to say "ohayo gozaimasu" [good morning] instead of just "ohayo" and "okaeri nasai" [welcome home] instead of just "okaeri."
Beh. I'm stupid.
